5 ways to tell if it's a real diamond

We'll teach you how to tell if a diamond is real with this easy tips

When it comes to diamonds it can be tricky to tell which one is real if you are not an expert. It’s possible that if you come across a jewel with this stone, is either because you are making your first purchase or someone gave it to you as a gift. If you need to know if it is the real deal, here are some tips that will help you solve the mystery.

1. Straight Edges:

Zoom in on the diamond using a magnifier. You will be able to observe the perfection of the edges in the cut. The diamonds used in jewelry go through a faceting process in which the stone is given the necessary cut to help the light enter, maing it more shiny and beautiful. These edges do not deteriorate, not even with time. Pay a really close look at it. If, for example,  you noticed that the edges are worn, it is an imitation and not a real diamond.

2. Density of the stone:

Did you know that diamonds have a high degree of density, from 3.51 to 3.53 approximately? This property makes them a heavy stone compared to others. So if you drop a diamond into a glass of water, it will immediately sink to the bottom. Instead, fake diamonds will float on water, instead of sinking. This occurs due to the different densities between the real and fake stones. Amazing, right?

Note: This will only work if the stone is loose and not set in a piece of jewelry.

3. Only one diamond can cut or scratch another:

One of the most beautiful qualities of the diamond is its hardness, which allows it to always look in perfect condition. It is precisely why it´s the symbol of eternal and unbreakable love. Well, diamonds are the hardest mineral in nature! Try the following test:

Try to scratch the diamond with a sharp structure. If you can see any marks, it is an imitation. If the stone remains intact, it is possibly a diamond. Another way to recognize it is to try to scratch a glass surface with the sharp side of the stone. If the glass is marked, it’s probably real!

4. Blow it:

Yes, seriously, blow! Place the stone near your mouth and blow a little on its surface, as if you wanted to cloud a mirror with your breath. Diamonds absorb heat, so instead of tarnishing, this puff will disappear immediately. You can also do this test with a synthetic stone, so you can see how it keeps the steamed for longer on its surface.

5. Laboratory certificate:

Let's face it, it is not easy to identify a natural diamond. Do not beat yourself! You can resort to the most accurate option: diamond authentication. The easiest way to recognize a diamond is if it has a certificate of authenticity. If your are the buyer, ask the jeweler for one, if you got it as a gift or as part of a inheritance take to an expert and ask for an evaluation

We hope these tips have helped you to clear up your first doubts. However, if you really need to know the type of stone you have, we advise you to consult an expert.
